Pay As You Go was launched in the UK in the 1990s, and was largely responsible for the high growth in Mobile Phone users in the UK. Pay As You Go is a great way to own a mobile phone as you are not committed to a contract and you can spend as much or as little as you wanted. When Pay As You Go was launched the phones cost next to nothing to buy, but this changed in 2001 as the networks stopped subsidising the handsets as much as they were before so the handset prices went up.

So these days if you sit down and work out the costs between Pay As You Go and Contract, you will find that contract is a much cheaper option than Pay As You Go. As you would get a free phone and have free phone calls over the year, rather than spend £150 on a phone plus your calls.

So its only best to buy a Pay As You Go if you are under 18 years old, have a bad credit history, or intend to just use your phone in emergencies.

Pay As You Go is sometimes known as Prepay, Pay As You Like or Pay As You Use.
